More Graduates to Find Employment in 2012, Allsup Advises Workers to Map Out Financial Plans

Belleville, IL (PRWEB) May 18, 2012

Theres good news on the horizon for the Class of 2012. A recent survey by the National Association of Colleges and Employers estimates a 10.2 percent increase in college graduates scoring jobs after graduation compared to last year. As they begin to navigate the workforce, young workers should focus on planning for long-term financial security, including a potential disability, according to Allsup, a nationwide provider of Social Security Disability Insurance (SSDI) representation and Medicare plan selection services.

Starting a new career is a time of promise and possibilities, but theres a considerable chance statistically that younger workers will contend with a work-stopping injury or illness before they reach full retirement age. The Social Security Administration (SSA) reports that a 20-year-old has a three in 10 chance of becoming disabled before reaching retirement. Nearly 350,000 people age 31 and younger currently rely on SSDI benefits. Young workers may not realize that part of their Social Security taxes go toward SSDI, or, if they are aware, may never investigate whether these benefits will be enough to support them and their families.

You should never take your income for grantedmaking the effort to plan ahead financially is crucial, said Tricia Blazier, senior specialist for the Allsup Disability Life Planning Center?. No one likes to think about a tragedy causing a work stoppage, but its important to think beyond your current circumstances when planning for the future. Social Security Disability Insurance should be considered just one part of a safety net that also includes employer-provided or private disability plans and personal investments.

SSDI is a federally mandated insurance program that taxpayers and their employers fund through payroll taxes. It is designed to provide monthly benefits to those who have experienced a severe disability and cannot work for 12 months or longer, or who have a terminal condition.

Social Security Disability and Finances

The earlier a serious disability occurs, the less time people have had to prepare financially. Thats why its important not to put off planning. Ideally, as a graduate, you will enter the workforce and enjoy good health and a long and rewarding career, Blazier said. However, if you encounter a disability, the current level of Social Security disability benefits earned through your job, while very helpful, probably wont be enough if you are forced to stop working.

Following are considerations for graduates examining their financial readiness.

Evaluate private disability insurance and emergency funds. Finding other ways to minimize financial difficulties down the line is imperative. Check out long-term disability insurance plans that you pay into now, and create an emergency savings fund you truly only use in an emergency, Blazier said.

Understand SSDI and the potential wait for benefits. Every worker can earn up to four credits annually. Most workers must have earned 40 credits during the past 10 years to be eligible for SSDI benefits. Workers under age 31 may be eligible for disability coverage with as few as six credits in three years. However, relying solely on SSDI could cause severe financial hardship, Blazier added. More than 1.8 million SSDI applicants currently are awaiting review of their claims and disability appeals, according to the SSA. The Social Security disability review process is complex, and some applicants may wait two or more years to be awarded SSDI benefits.

Know current financial circumstances. Those new to the workforce may start off living paycheck to paycheck as they begin their careers, but its important to budget and review opportunities for saving. If you are like 40 percent of the population, you could not go more than three months without income, Blazier said. If your only plan in the event of a disability is getting SSDI, you could be setting yourself up for a financial disaster.

For example, the average monthly SSDI income for someone who is 21 is just $ 502.67 compared to $ 1,053.24 for a 50-year-old. However, applying for SSDI is an important part of managing finances in the event of a disability and offers a number of advantages beyond monthly income, including eventual eligibility for Medicare coverage and dependent benefits. With that in mind, its beneficial to thoroughly review the SSDI program and learn how best to secure these benefits when theyre needed.

Parents who now can put college tuition behind them should start saving as well. Allsup is committed to helping people of all ages map out their next steps, especially in the face of a severe disability that prevents them from working, Blazier said.

Every Monday Matters Employee Engagement Program Teaches You Matter

Seattle, WA (PRWEB) February 28, 2012

Every Monday Matters is spreading the message that You Matter through their employee engagement program which gives businesses a road map to create a sustainability program within their company. It may seem simple, yet those words You Matter are often not realized in the workplace today. As businesses want to become more socially responsible, Every Monday Matters programs include a series of compelling action items, coupled with community outreach events, which inspire employees to get involved. But, how does that translate to business success?

In a recent article from Forbes Magazine, The Top 10 Trends in CSR for 2012, Employee Engagement emerges as the number three top trend in business. The article cites a recent study from The Society for Human Resources Management, which compares companies actively pursuing worthy environmental and social efforts with those companies who do not have strong sustainability programs. The study discovered that employees are more engaged and that employee morale was 55% better, business process was 43% more efficient, public image was 43% stronger, and employee loyalty was 38% better than companies which have poor sustainability programs. Anne Hess, Regional Account Manager for Every Monday Matters comments, Our program works with the whole organization. When everyone in the company from the CEO to the entry level employee participates in our program they understand that they matter and can make a difference each day in their company, home and community. This transforms the corporate culture and translates to business success.

As companies are working to improve the bottom line, increase employee satisfaction, retention and recruit motivated, committed employees, an environment where employees feel appreciated is critical and the You Matter message makes a powerful impact. In recent studies companies with highly engaged employees have three times the operating margin (Towers and Watson) and four times the earnings per share (Gallup). Matthew Emerzian, CEO of Every Monday Matters, states, It is no longer enough for a company just to write a check for a cause and coin themselves socially responsible. This ignores todays employee. They want to be involved, roll up their sleeves, and feel theyve played a role in making a difference in the world.

Based on the 2011 Morehead Employee Engagement survey, which compares and ranks companies, the Every Monday Matters Corporate Program improved one healthcare companys ranking from the top 25% of companies surveyed to the top 7% in just one year. Stephanie Gallo, VP of Marketing at E&J Gallo Winery acknowledges the program by saying, Thank you for creating such a powerful program. It has had a tremendous impact on our employees and company culture. It has truly made a measurable difference.

Returning to its Roots, The Silk Road Ensemble with Yo-Yo Ma Will Perform at Tanglewood June 22 & 24, 2012

Boston, MA (PRWEB) May 17, 2012

Hailed by the Boston Globe as a kind of roving musical laboratory without walls, the international Silk Road Ensemble draws its members from countries as distant and diverse as China, India, Spain, South Korea, Iran, Japan, Switzerland, Israel, and the United States. With founder, artistic director and fellow Ensemble member Yo-Yo Ma, this eclectic group will gather at Tanglewood in Lenox, Massachusetts, to perform two concerts at Ozawa Hall on June 22 and 24, 2012. Performances begin at 8 p.m. on both evenings.

Returning to Tanglewood, for us, is like coming home, said Yo-Yo Ma. It was at Tanglewood 12 years ago that a group of musicians from around the world first came together to form the Silk Road Ensemble. Then we were strangers, and many of us had only the language of music in common. Over the years, weve returned several times to develop new music. So Tanglewood is, if you will, the Ensemble’s birthplace, and it remains an inspiration for us.

On both evenings the Ensemble will perform internationally inspired music by composers Giovanni Sollima from Sicily (Taranta Project) and Sapo Perapaskero from Romania (Turceasca). Rounding out the program will be music composed by performing members of the Ensemble: Shristi by Sandeep Das from India, who plays tabla; Mui?eiras by Cristina Pato from Galicia, who plays gaita; and Ascending Bird by Colin Jacobsen, an American violinist, in collaboration with Iranian santur player Siamak Aghaei. (A full concert program follows.)

The Silk Road Project is grateful to its corporate sponsors for their support of these and other activities. Hyosung Corp. is Lead Sponsor of the Silk Road Project 2011-2014. Rolex is the Exclusive Partner of the Silk Road Project 2011-2012.

The Silk Road Ensemble will next perform in the United States in September October 2012, with concerts in Chapel Hill, NC; Miami, FL; Princeton, NJ; Smithfield, RI; Chicago, IL; and Stevens Point, WI. For more on future programs visit http://www.silkroadproject.org/schedule.

Many of the musicians first came together under the artistic direction of Yo-Yo Ma at a workshop at Tanglewood Music Center in Massachusetts in 2000. Since then, in various configurations, Ensemble artists have collaborated on a diverse range of musical and multimedia projects, presenting innovative performances that spring from Eastern and Western traditions and contemporary musical crossroads. The Silk Road Ensemble has recorded five albums and performed to critical acclaim throughout Asia, Europe and North America.

Yo-Yo Ma:

The many-faceted career of cellist Yo-Yo Ma is testament to his continual search for new ways to communicate with audiences and to his personal desire for artistic growth and renewal. Mr. Ma maintains a balance between his engagements as soloist with orchestras worldwide and his recital and chamber music activities. His discography includes over 75 albums, including more than 15 Grammy award winners. In addition to serving as founder and artistic director of the Silk Road Project, Mr. Ma also serves as the Judson and Joyce Green Creative Consultant to the Chicago Symphony Orchestras Institute for Learning, Access and Training. His work focuses on the transformative power music can have in individuals lives, and on increasing the number and variety of opportunities audiences have to experience music in their communities.

Mr. Ma was born in Paris to Chinese parents who later moved the family to New York. He began to study cello at the age of four, attended the Juilliard School and in 1976 graduated from Harvard University. He has received numerous awards, among them the 2001 National Medal of Arts, the 2006 Sonning Prize, the 2008 World Economic Forums Crystal Award, and the 2010 Presidential Medal of Freedom. Cellist Yo-Yo Ma founded the Project in 1998 with a vision of connecting the worlds neighborhoods by bringing together artists and audiences around the globe. The Project takes inspiration from the historical Silk Road trading routes, employing the Silk Road as a modern metaphor for sharing and learning across cultures, art forms and disciplines.

Under the artistic direction of Mr. Ma and the leadership of CEO and Executive Director Laura Freid, the Silk Road Project presents performances by the acclaimed Silk Road Ensemble, engages in cross-cultural exchanges and residencies, leads workshops for students, and partners with prominent cultural institutions to create educational programs and materials. Silk Road Connect, the Projects multidisciplinary arts integration approach, inspires students and educators to make connections across all areas of their lives and studies. Developing new music is a central undertaking of the Silk Road Project, which has been involved in commissioning and performing more than 70 new musical and multimedia works from composers and arrangers around the world.
